Conscious Competence Learning Model

I learnt this from the practice of The Professional and Reflective Practitioner and it is quite helpful when reflecting on certain skills / competencies that one would like to improve. However, in order to practice this, one must be open to feedback and reflect about skills to progress in the learning proces(Rusconi, 2024). Learning is a practice that should always be happening in our minds.

Unconscious incompetence: Unaware of what we can’t do and don’t know

E.g.: There was a time when I didn't know that what I say tend to hurt people.

Conscious incompetence: Become aware of our development needs and start to do something about it.

E.g.: About 9 years ago, I found out about it and looked for a way to stop hurting people. I tried not to talk if I had nothing good to say. I ended up being really quiet for a long time and became a total alien to myself.

I then looked for ways to speak with more edifying words. Making simple compliments that were true. And then backing them up with observations.

Conscious competence: Using our skills and knowledge, but watching and monitoring ourselves.

E.g.: I found that it could help people who are going through a season where they might feel stagnant. It encouraged those who have been doing the same profession for 10 years, and was not looking for a change that would include more responsibilities.

At the same time, I wanted to see how these kind words would encourage those with experience in helping newbies with their abundance in, for example, teaching styles, strategies and frame of mind, such as catching students doing good rather than catching them doing bad, would help to change student behaviours. I witnessed a class TRANSFORMATION, from before this teacher and after this teacher came in, so that says a lot about her experience in her field. I told her about the change, and how much I learned just by watching her work. I learnt something as simple as speaking slower.

Unconscious competence: The skills become naturalised. This is like Reynolds’s notion of ‘second nature’.

E.g.: I wanted to master those skills she taught me.

However, unconsciously, I reverted to speaking my normal speed, which didn't help in class management. I will have to get back to speaking deliberately slowly. I also need to be prepared to say only the things that will be edifying and meaningful to my class.

When teaching my class, I can prepare words to say to them, but eventually, I must be able to say them naturally.
